A warm welcome to Spannered’s
first mailout of 2008

NB, If you're looking at this in Gmail or this looks kinda
funny then click here to read this newsletter
in its full glory.

We've broken ever so slightly with protocol this mailing by sneaking a few names onto the list that didn't actually sign up (it’s not spamming, so much as spreading a little music and culture, really). So, if you're reading this and thinking 'get the hell out of my inbox', just ask us to unsubscribe you and we'll never ever send you anything ever again, okay? If,  however, you're thinking 'looks alright but I can't be arsed with more email clutter each week', stress not — we can't be arsed doing a mailout more than a few times a year anyway.

Site relaunch!

Spannered reached the ripe old age of one year old in back in December, and to celebrate we decided to rebuild the whole thing. Our code gimps are still tinkering around under the bonnet, so please let us know if you spot anything in disarray (unless you're looking at it in Internet Explorer 6, that is, in which case just download yourself a decent browser). If you've any thoughts on our rejig, we'd love to hear from you.

So, without further ado, here's what's new on the site since we last bugged you:

A big thank you to everyone who contacted us with mixes since our last mailing. Apologies if we didn’t get back to you — we did give everything a listen! (Take it as a measure of our slackness that you didn't get a reply, rather than silent comment on your handiwork.) Keep those links coming!

Maga Bo's Brazilian music archive

As mentioned in our last mailout, Spannered has hooked up with Rio de Janeiro-based DJ, producer and roving beat-seeker Maga Bo to host his immense Sambacana radio show series. Originally put together for the Brazil Network site, the series explores pretty much the entire geography of Brazil's music. And to celebrate the launch of Sambacana on Spannered, we’ve a brand new mix from Rio's Lucio K for you. Word from Bo in Rio is that there's plenty more on the way in 2008, so hold tight!

New music interviews

DJ Paulão — Music According to...
Hot on the heels of his supercool mixtape, Spannered interviews Brazilian DJ and music researcher DJ Paulão.

Spannered's correspondent in São Paulo, renowned DJ and journalist Camilo Rocha, recently interviewed a bunch of artists for a piece on 'globalist DJs' for Brazil's biggest paper, Folha de S. Paulo. Due to constraints of space, much of the material he amassed didn't make it into the article; the transcripts, however, are excellent, and Camilo has kindly passed on Q&As with Wayne Marshall (Wayne&Wax), DJ /rupture, Diplo and Maga Bo for inclusion in the Spannered archive. Go check them out.

Martin Longley in New York

Roving music scribe Martin Longley has been soaking up the sounds of New York's music scene over the last few months. In the first of many extended pieces for Spannered, he pulls together highlights from the NYC fest thrown by Lisbon's forward-looking jazz label, Clean Feed. Martin also takes a look at some of the acts who have been shaking up the city's jazz clubs in recent months, hops onto the city's global music circuit, seeks out oddball country and underbelly cabaret, and even takes in the sounds of Harry Partch's quadrangularis reversum. He’s also contributed a slew of excellent live reviews from recent shows around the city, featuring:
