Clark
Ted
By Edward Blake

A no-messing around intro leads into a deliciously murky yet sparkling bendy-tones floor destroyer. Ted is a great name for a great track, and this is the sort of thing that makes me believe music still has a future where it actually sounds futuristic. It’s a short tune too — something that shows to-be-admired restraint given how rocking the main theme of the tune is; it simply drifts away to be morphed into a 30-second upbeat drum workout. It’s all very heady and sets you up nicely for the rest of the content, which invariably goes downhill after such a giddy start.

The Bibio remix of Ted is a nice enough acoustic guitar-edit thing that uses the melody of the original to create some pastoral sequenced folky-ness. The remaining four Clark tracks all head into sound design territory, with a luscious collection of drones, synth swells, soundtrack breaks and field recordings. It’s slightly on the laboured side but makes me definitely want to go out and find out more about an artist who I know from all the fuss but have never bothered to look into. And coming from someone as lazy as me, that’s a big recommendation.
