Ova Looven
Gravity Has Expired
By Edward Blake

Blimey, I wasn’t expecting this from the packaging. Ova Looven have the glacial 80s sound of bands like The Cure and Talk Talk, overlaying down-tempo house and vocals that make one imagine Underworld covering Boston. It’s a bizarrely appealing combination on opening track The Killer Six. Yes, it plods. Yes, it is all very naïve sounding. Yes, it is background music of the highest order. But it’s also a dreamily romantic piece of sensual aural experience that will surprise you with its elegance. The funk-a-delic ending could have been dropped though. After that it’s everything that you thought could be awful about this band from the opening track cruelly confirmed. Dull, drifting, pointlessly edited filler of the lowest order. It ultimately makes you feel very dirty for having liked the first tune, and would suggest the band might want to try remixes from now on.
