Good Girl/Mr G (aka Goofy)
Degree/QuestionThe question sometimes arises as to how dancehall producers get the often absurd names they give to their instrumentals (rhythms/riddims)... Well, no prizes for guessing where Range Rover came from and this from the same label that brought us last year's excellent but equally poorly-monikered Escalade rhythm, named after another model of SUV! Fortunately Goofy's production is much better than his uninspired rhythm titles. Range Rover is lit up by shimmery, summery, intertwining synth flute and guitar lines which are underpinned by a big, bouncing beat and crisp hi-hats skipping along happily…
After opening with an uncharacteristically (for dancehall) politically correct plea to womenfolk 'ladies give a straight up ultimatum to your guy: just treat it like it's special or prepare to say goodbye' Degree leaves you no time to catch your breath before launching into a wickedly flowing, super-fast verse that never fails to get a dancefloor bubbling. Goofy's vocal on the rhythm (on Question) is another one directed at the ladies, bigging up the Jamaican girls for having the wickedest slam ('if yuh nuh have yuh better try get one') and keeping the vibe upbeat and summery throughout. All this is perfect for pretending you're on a white sandy beach somewhere right now.
