Chesse Roots
Call Me Rambo/Rambo Gun Salute
By Masta G

Growing interest in dancehall has created a thriving market for classic early examples of the genre. But scant attention has so far been paid to the UK soundsystem culture of the 1980s which, in the wake of the massive Sleng Teng riddim, became a fertile breeding ground for the early ragga sound and a crop of successful homegrown vocalists (Smiley Culture, Kenny Knots).

So, you've got to hand it to Germany's Basic Replay for digging in the crates to find Call Me Rambo, produced by Chesse Roots (resident of North London and sound system veteran) and with vocals by his nephew Ackee. An inspired combination of swirling helicopter and gun samples counterpoint Ackee's soulful vocal and insistent chorus. 'Don't you know, raggamuffin's a Rambo', he sings and this heavy tune leaves no room for argument. While many reggae traditionalists bemoan the use of computerised equipment, it created new opportunities for producers on both sides of the Atlantic and the Call Me Rambo riddim has depth and a raw energy sure to create dancefloor pressure.

The flipside showcases a well developed dub sensibility on two more high grade versions which rework the tune to good effect. aApart from the excellent Honest Jon's compilation Watch How the People Dancing this stuff is hard to track to down, but more than worth the effort. Perhaps with a few more releases like this surefire soundboy killer we'll be hearing more of the UK's own forgotten dancehall classics.
