Automato
The Single
By Masta G

Automato's varied and inventive eponymous debut album offered a new perspective on the New York hip hop scene, with a sound influenced by rock and soul and mavericks the DFA (also behind The Rapture) on production duties. Not one for the hip hop purists but then someone probably said the same thing about the Beastie Boys once and their influence on the white boy hip hop tradition is clearly audible here almost twenty years on.

Some heavy Shadow-esque drums and a plaintive synth underpin quickfire wordplay on the single – where other rappers pack heat, these guys pack chapstick. 'If it ain't soul music, then it ain't my music' proclaims the chorus and, on the strength of this release, it's easy to believe them. Automato combine disparate musical styles with conviction to produce a funky and refreshingly futuristic sound which relies on live instruments as much as slick sampling and production.
