Smyglyssna
We Can Fix It RemixesVertical Form follow up the success of Swede Henrik Johansson's first album with a remix project, allowing a few familiar names to give their take on the Smyglyssna sound.
The Boom Bip mix is a punchy affair with crisp hip hop beats and arcade game FX, while up-and-coming stars from Brighton Fujiya and Miyagi manufacture another loping hip hop tempo groove, complete with backwards vocals and sweet marimbas. Soft Pink Truth (Drew Daniels from Matmos) unleashes his own signature brand of chopped up funk which in the style of old lets us know, 'this is a remix!'. He uses some distinct sounding record sliding effects and manipulates these along with some inventive edits without once losing the flow. The Einoma mix sounds different to the rest of the mixes on here to my ears, sounding more wholly electronic and less beat driven, sculpting an abstract and glassy groove which moves into more warped territory with its totally indecipherable shout outs. There are also mixes by Restiform Bodies, Sixtoo from Anticon, Smyglyssyna himself (with a wicked vocal mash up) and a new track to boot.
All in all a versatile package of next level hip hop offshoots that should appeal across the board. Effort has been taken to use the right kind of remixers who have all added their own individual styles to an already impressive sound. One certainly worth your time and money.
