L Pierre
Total Horizontal Part 1
By Ed Chamberlin

L Pierre (formerly Lucky Pierre) is Adian Moffat, the vocalist of Scottish miserablist duo, Arab Strap. Despite crediting his cohort Malcolm Middleton as doing “most things musical” and himself as doing “most things not”, the material on his solo releases certainly is musical. Jettisoning his distinctive Scottish brogue in favour of an all-instrumental approach, Moffat nevertheless has created something lyrical and of understated beauty. Vintage drums machines chug along as a lovely piano motif circles overhead. tinny string crescendos and Spanish guitar samples gives the impression of a hazy and melancholic summer afternoon. It's like the saddest ice-cream van music ever. The two tracks essentially repeat the same themes, with the second adding some mournful horns to the mix. It's gorgeous stuff, but too short unfortunately. This music tempts you to fall into a relaxed daze, but only inhabits your room for nine minutes. Pick it up and check it out. Just like me, you'll be longing for a full length by Lucky Pierre to appear for summer.
