Baikonour
Hot Milk
By Ed Chamberlin

The last I heard of Baikonour was lending the opening track, Lick Lokoum, to Melodic's Tracks For Horses compilation. As John Cusak (or Nick Hornby for you readers out there) pointed out in High Fidelity, the secret of a good compilation is starting with a cracker. At that Lick Lokoum certainly was. So the prospect of hearing the likes of Amon Tobin and Gavouna re-interpreting Baikonour's music was mouth-watering indeed. Amon Tobin fires the first shot with Coca Sun. It's a little heavy-handed to be fair. Starting with gorgeous chimes and bells, Tobin smothers the track with obnoxious synth squelches and uncharacteristically simplistic beats. It ends up just being irritating. Gavouna has more success with Oben Beg, a string-loaded house number. Pleasant, but an opportunity for something awesome seems to have been missed. Topo Gigio adds some much needed funk to the proceedings on Calimero Renegade. But things only really get going on Imitation Electric Piano's Zap 210, which is so innocent and blissful it will bring a smile to anyone's face. It sounds like the soundtrack to being locked in a toy and sweet factory overnight when you were eight. This track, however, can't save the EP from being simply, good, but not great. Baikonour makes some great music, so it may be worth checking out his unremixed material instead.
