!!! have been simultaneously one of the most talked about and difficult to talk about bands of recent years. They might, just might have come to straighten out the pathetic parade that is the charts. Hello? Is This Thing On? may have abrasive vocals that would confine it to the only the more adventurous radio stations, but with a bassline like this, you cannot resist. Their funky dub-Latin-punk is obviously influenced by Gang of Four, but they have taken that old horse and flogged something vital and exciting into it, and turned out a magnificent seven for the 21st century. OK, it’s stretched out way beyond five minutes now, and vocalist Nic Offer has begun tearing his hair out in frustration at not being understood, so maybe it’s not ready for the prime time. Nevertheless, !!! are still here and making a glorious racket.
