What Happened

By Miles Hawthorn

I’m pretty sure this record marks the return to vocals of Blake Baxter, the self-styled ‘Prince of Techno’, and as someone who still plays When A Thought Becomes U, I was looking forward to hearing this with some relish. The A side is a hypnotic house track with an old style Chicago bassline and some spooky reverbed keys which are really complemented by the vocals. For me the first track on the flip is the one though. The track opens with some understated 303 bassline action and a solitary kickdrum before a quivering flute sound paves the way for Blake’s sleazy sounding vocals ‘I got my mind made up, you can get it any time, tonight is fine’. The 303 then morphs into something else altogether to chants of ‘acid’ as the vocals get dirtier and the drums pick up. He then proceeds to tell the ladies how they like what he does to them, what they can do to him and all this with some great Muttley style dirty laughter. Quality stuff. The third track is another minimal bleep fest with Blake asking ‘What happened? Where did it all go wrong?’ Citing the famous clubs worldwide of years gone by, he laments the gradual change from how it used to be to a world of super clubs and overpriced big name DJ superstars.

Forget what anyone else may tell you; this is proper acid house as it should be for the year 2004 made by those that know, heady and hypnotic rhythms to lose yourself in under the strobe light.
