Amen Andrews
Vol. 1
By Masta G

The new offering from Luke Vibert (volume one of a series of five EPs from his new Amen Andrews incarnation) takes us all the way back to the old skool. His alter ego seems to have just crash landed in 2003 from a 1995 jungle rave, probably still clutching his whistle and gurning happily. The stand out track of the four on the record has to be 1000001 Style, which uses swirling amen breaks and cheeky reggae samples to produce a sound that’s fresher and more energising than ever eight years after its inception. The other tracks take in dark jungle and a more fucked-up Squarepusher-type approach to the sound, with Vibert making dance-floor friendly production look easy. Its good to know that rave music still has its place, even without (most of) the drugs and general euphoria that fuelled it the first time round.
