Bird Box Street Art
The mysterious Klister Pete shows Stockholm's street artists how to avoid falling fowl of the law.

Ah, the beautiful and historic city of Stockholm. Known for its crisp coastal waters, mouth-watering meatballs and multitude of museums, over the past year Sweden’s capital has become home to a new form of street art – thanks to an artist working with the medium of bird boxes.

Allegedly the handiwork of one Klister Pete, ('Glue Peter' – responsible for the city’s famous ‘deer head’ street stickers), this wave of urban creative expression so far seems to have avoided ruffling the feathers of Stockholm’s authorities. More than 100 elaborately designed bird boxes have cropped up about the city over 12 months – some of huge proportions, such as a two-meter wide cowboy’s head, perched aloft a road sign. The themes of the boxes are wide-ranging, from historical figures and convincing signpost replicas to impersonations of our feathered friends themselves.

Although 30 or so have been removed – likely the actions of fly-by-night collectors – most remain, seemingly circumnavigating Stockholm’s zero tolerance graffiti policy. And as some of the boxes are thought to contain nesting birds, any attempt at a clean-up operation could well leave egg on the face of the powers that be.
