Ninja’s diminutive turntable assassin returns but this time to your screens, with a DVD documenting the Japanese leg of his 2007 album tour. Having made a name for himself as a live performer before entering the studio, a live version of the album was always going to be something to behold. The DVD documents the tour’s final show at Tokyo’s Liquid Room, where Kentaro envisioned a live show like no other, using six projectors together with giant screens to turn the stage and his music into a show in itself. Easeback, a Japanese director known for creative videos, helped with the whole thing and the result is a truly outstanding live performance which shows the potential of new and ingenious audiovisual combinations.

During the show Kentaro not only recreates most of the album with all its guests, including Pharcyde, Hifana and Japanese flutist Kisho Tosha, but also throws in new live compositions and works from his career to date. More than just turntablism, a club night or a live show, it’s a real tour de force that shows how fresh and vital Japanese music can be. The DVD also comes with bonus videos and footage.

Enter the Newground Live! is out now on Ninja Tune.
